Welcome to the Kiwi Room
The Kiwi Kindy room aspires to the Reggio Emilia approach. The children come into this learning environment with a wealth of knowledge and our teachers tap into that knowledge and build upon their strengths. The children learn through interaction with others including parents, teachers and peers. Our curriculum is emergent and originates from the children’s ideas and interests.
We encourage parents to participate and contribute to our programme. The children have the choice of indoor/outdoor play throughout the day, where they are given the opportunity to freely explore. We have two playgrounds and our room is well equipped with wonderful resources that are fun safe to explore. These resources also reflect the natural world around us. We greatly value our unique surroundings and often take the opportunity to go for walks around the centre admiring the beauty of nature and our friendly farm animals. Our aim is to prepare the children so that they become competent, confident and capable life long learners and to enable them to make a smooth transition into school. We place a high value on developing social skills, listening to the teacher and following basic rules. We have mat times which gives children an opportunity to learn new concepts, communication and share ideas, songs, listen to others and sit still for a short period of time. Through exploring and experimenting in their environment the children learn how to do new things and develop a sense of achievement. When the children are at the age of 4 1/2 we invite them to attend an extension group which is a school readiness programme. Our philosophy is to lay sound foundations for lifelong learning and to develop a love of learning in each child. We believe that as educators our role is to provide positive guidance and encouragement, building relationships by responding to their feelings, interests and abilities. We develop children’s emotional well-being by helping them to establish a strong foundation of self-esteem, confidence and social skills. We hope to develop children’s knowledge, independence and creativity through educationally planning an appropriate range of activities that will cater for the learning and developmental needs of each child. We will notice, recognise and respond to children’s learning and create opportunities to extend their current knowledge and skills through meaningful play. We believe children learn and explore an environment that respects all children’s uniqueness and value their contribution to our programme. We encourage children to care for their environment, respect the equipment, each others work and each other. Meal times Our room aims to promote healthy eating habits for our children. We offer healthy morning tea and ask families/whanau to provide a nutritious lunch and afternoon tea (if attending aftercare). Children are supported to develop their independence and self-help skills by using tongs and opening packaged food. To keep within Health and Safety food standards, we ask that that perishable items are named and placed in the fridge. You will find Healthy Lunchbox Ideas in your Kindy welcome pack. |
